Urban Refuge

Urban Refuge

When one thinks about fly fishing, their minds usually retreat to a place with cold, fast water, framed by steep terrain or open meadows. Hidden within the overlooked drainage ways of urban landscapes, the same creeks that have been training the limestone bottoms for millions of years can still be found with slight variation in meander. Residing within these creeks are various species of “trash fish” that have historically been disregarded by the fly fishing world.

After graduation, I weighed a few employment options between where I wanted to live and who I would want to work for. After favoring the latter, I landed in what I thought was the least fishy place in the country – Dallas, TX. Then comes Jeff. Jeff grew up in Dallas, making his discovery of fly fishing a miracle in itself. Jeff’s passion and local knowledge opened my mind to the world of fly fishing in unlikely places. From that point on, I would discover the limitless nooks of fishable water in an unlikely place where one lesson rose to the top -  regardless of where life may take you, you never know what is in your backyard until you search for it. All images featured were taken within 20 miles of downtown Dallas.
